In June of 1963, John F. Kennedy sounded the optimistic note that good times would benefit all with the phrase, “a rising tide lifts all ships.” It was as true in ’63 as it is today. As new technologies are introduced, the benefits of communities working together create a sum that is much greater than its individual parts.
I’m excited today that Pavilion Data Systems has joined the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA) with a strong commitment to the standardization of composable/disaggregated infrastructures, management frameworks, and data security. Over the coming months, our representatives will become integrated into these technical working groups and educational activities.
I remember having goosebumps in 1997 when a group of SNIA founding companies met in the backroom of an exhibit hall at the now-defunct NetWorld/InterOp. Our goal was to raise the tide for the nascent concept of Storage Area Networks. To this day, SNIA’s mission remains “to lead the storage industry in developing and promoting vendor-neutral architectures, standards and educational services that facilitate the efficient management, movement, and security of information.” As one of the founding members, I know that there was a genuine commitment to helping customers adopt new technologies through standardization. Regardless of the vendor, our belief was that together we could improve and accelerate new technology adoption.
As we begin the 2nd wave of NVMe adoption, with composable/disaggregated infrastructure, NVMe-oF, and radically better ways of orchestration, the role of organizations like SNIA remains absolutely critical. Michael Oros, SNIA Executive Director states, “NVMe-oF is now one of the hottest and most interesting storage interconnect technologies out there and we welcome vendors such as Pavilion Data to collaborate with our community, demonstrating the true benefits of this technology through interoperability and enterprise workloads.”
