IDC Technology Spotlight: ​​High-Density Storage Infrastructure Drives a Compelling Value Proposition

Most enterprises have started to transition into digital first organizations, and data has become their most prized asset. The workloads they deploy often require both extremely high performance and extremely low latency, as the speed at which they can process and action data equates to the speed at which they can go to market and reap profits. Technologies exist that help improve the performance of legacy storage arrays, but many modern applications demand performance that the traditional setups simply can’t offer.

To solve this challenge, organizations have started implementing high-density storage infrastructure, which is defined as a system that delivers latencies in the tens of µsecs, IOPS in the tens of millions, and throughput in the hundreds of gigabytes and takes up less than one-seventh the rack space of traditional scale-out systems.

 Architecture is critical in this equation, as the any-to-any connectivity between controllers and storage devices is a key enabler of high-density infrastructure. Even legacy systems can adopt solid state storage and NVMe and move in a software-defined direction, but challenges with the basic dual controller array design limit their ability to meet the high-density infrastructure bar.
